The Christmas spirit was alive in Warwickshire at the weekend with the wonderful Carols at Warwick Castle event. This year’s event was a sell out success with all tickets sold well in advance of the evening and record funds raised for the local charities.  

 The spectacular annual event held every December in the dramatic surroundings of Warwick Castle is now a highlight of the festive calendar. The evening was enjoyed by over 2,500 people and included carol singing from the outstanding Choirs of St Mary’s Church accompanied by the Royal Spa Brass Band. The event was compered by BBC Coventry and Warwickshire’s radio presenter Annie Othen and there was a range of hot food, mulled wine and mince pies on sale, getting families into the festive mood for Christmas.

As a special new feature this year, St Mary’s Choirs, ConocoPhillips and Warwick Castle ran a spectacular competition to find the region’s next singing sensation. Over 60 local schools and numerous music groups were involved in the ‘Jet Factor’ competition and auditions were held at Warwick Castle on Saturday 28th November and 5th December. The winner Toby Desperles – Abel, age 12 from Stratford-Upon-Avon had the unique opportunity of performing alongside the Choir as well as winning a Nintendo Guitar Hero and a family annual pass to Warwick Castle.

St Mary’s Choirs Musical Director and senior judge of the competition Thomas Corns commented “The atmosphere was incredible on the evening with everyone joining in and getting into the Christmas spirit. The Choir thoroughly enjoyed the evening and Toby’s performance was outstanding”   

Several Midlands based businesses support the Carols event to make it a spectacular and memorable event for all and help raise significant funds for the charities. Sponsors include fuel supplier ConocoPhillips/Jet, quality supermarket Waitrose who have recently opened a new store in Kenilworth, the flexible marketing agency LMMC based in Leamington Spa and energy suppliers National Grid based in Warwickshire.

 Quentin Hayes, Chairman of the organising Committee, added: "This was a fantastic evening and a memorable start to Christmas week. Everyone seemed to have a really good time. We are indebted to the many volunteers for their help, and to Warwick Castle and the other sponsors for their considerable support"
